Eric's Story Series: "Get Professional Help"
One thing I learned in Canada is you do what you are good at and get professional help on things that you are not good at. You go to a mechanic to fix your car. You go to an accountant to do your tax. You go to a hairdresser to cut your hair. Don’t let your wife cut your hair. I tried that – it’s a bad idea. How much can you save? 15 bucks a month, 180 a year, that money can't change your life a bit, but a bad haircut can easily cost you a career opportunity. So you do what you are good at and get professional help on things you are not good at: like communication. You come to me to get help on effective communication. Because that’s what I do – I teach effective communication. So far I am the best coach you can find. If you find a better coach, let me know and I’ll go with you. Seriously, I want to be better. Until you find a better one, I’m your best coach. I’m the best not because I speak English better than anybody else. I’m the best because I was like you 3 years ago. I’m just one step ahead of you. I know your problem! I was once struggling with English communication. I found a way to speak and it changed my life. If you do what I did, you will be me in 3 years. The thing is speaking is not knowledge. There is no book you can read ... and “bang” you wake up the next morning and become a better speaker. No. Speaking is a skill. And a skill must be practised. Confucius said: “You hear, you forget … you take notes, you also forget … only if you do, you understand.” And you can’t do it at home by yourself. DIY doesn’t work on this subject. You have to come to this classroom because you need me and you need each other.
